Granada, from Suite Española op.47 by I.Albéniz

You are probably wondering about the choice of tonality and tuning of this masterpiece. Well, the guilty party is the opening chord. When I transcribe I always choose one passage (or like in this case a single musical element) which seems to me to sound convincing only in a certain way. To make it possible, I pick the tonality and the tuning after that element and build the transcription around it.

The warmth and the perfect disposition of the notes of the original Albeniz’s opening could be preserved only in that way, it sounds just so gorgeous! The combination of tonality and tuning make also possible a magical ending in harmonics. You will also find that all together the piece is easier to play and gains through this a much more fluent gesture.
